Onagraceae (Evening Primrose Family)

Epilobium angustifolium

Fireweed, Common

Plant TypeForb
Flower Colorpink, red
EdibilityThe young leaves are said to be edible, but mildly bitter and astringent. I have only tried eating a bit once, and though it tasted good, it seemed to burn my mouth a little, but not uncomfortably. Sources say that the pith is edible and sweet.
Medicinal UsesThe tea has beneficial properties.
Other NotesThe plant is so named because it is usually the first flower to appear after a fire, if it is present in the area. This may be because it has deep roots which can escape fire damage.
